Food Geek Friday: October Unprocessed 2015

Hello Sunshines!

If you've been following me for any length of time (read: over a year) then you've heard me talk about October Unprocessed. It's a food challenge where you eat only unprocessed foods for the month of October. It was started by Eating Rules founder Andrew Wilder in 2009. Since then it's taken off and grows larger every year. This is my 5th year to participate and 3rd time to contribute an article. I learn new things about myself and food each time I do this.

It may sound super-daunting but it doesn't have to be. By unprocessed, we mean that it passes the "kitchen test" - that the food can be made with someone of reasonable skill in a reasonably stocked kitchen. You can start small. If you're eating a lot of fast food right now then maybe just shoot for a week or even a day. If you're eating relatively healthy and unprocessed it is, up the ante with stricter compliance.

You can also add special exceptions. Two of mine are client meals and local restaurants. When I have a meal with a client, I'm not going to worry about what I'm eating. Usually we're just shoveling some food in our face before we get back to work. And I make the exception for local restaurants because the likelihood of a 100% unprocessed kitchen is small, but supporting local business is something I highly value so I'll let it trump unprocessed.

Ultimately you can make it your own. Bottom line here is bringing awareness to what we're eating. So really, there's little excuse to not at least give it a try.
