Choosing Your Core Values

Choosing Your Core Values - Melinda Massie Marketing blog

When I last wrote about creating content for your target market, and how you needed to define what makes you unique, I said that I’d share my favorite core values exercise. So here it is!

I love having the core values defined because it’s such a simple yet clear way to always keep you on target and on mission.

Plus, if you’re having a narrowing down and creating your mission statement, this exercise can be a simpler way to get there until you have both to work from.

So today I’m sharing an excerpt from my workbook, The Performing Arts Marketing Crash Course: Marketing 101 + Plan workbook on core values.

Core Values

What it is:

The words that are at the core of what you do--what you value most in your career/business/organization.

Why you need it:

These words, along with the mission statement, give you an anchor.

As creatives, we can be overrun with ideas. It’s so easy to get off track. The core values will help keep you on-track and aligned with your vision.

They’re also super-helpful in decision-making. Anything related to what you do in your career, business, and/or organization needs to align with these values.

For your marketing plan:

Choose your core values!

If you don’t have any that immediately come to mind, I have a handy-dandy exercise to help you decide!

Following is a list of words that could be considered core values. Choose five-ish. (Some experts say 5-10 words, but I like to keep it at 4-5 because it’s easier to remember and keeps things more concise.)

Note: personally, I like to use the process of elimination and get rid of the words that don’t resonate with me, then continue to narrow them down until I get to my five.
